Hockey Goal
Can someone tell me why the 'goal crease' Ice Hockey is called a fold?
I am looking for the origin the word "fold" in the context of a hockey goal area.
Is called a fold, because originally, the lines that demarked the area are were natural indentations in the ice (carved in ice with a stick or Skate Balde), ie. were "folds" in the ice. The goalies themselves sculpted lines of fold so you can quickly look down (or use their peripheral vision) and know where they were located on the target – much faster and better than looking back. It was not always the case that the goals have been protected by the rule in turn (even if the players themselves, through intimidation, almost from the beginning hockey has reinforced the idea that opponents would not take shots at their goalkeeper). The physical area within the indentations became known as the area "fold" or "fold".
