How do I sand down a dinning room table?
I have this dinning room table I love and I dont want to get rid of it. But on the table surface its scratch up, i think it need to be resurface or sanded. How do I sand a table to make it look like brand new again?
Like most things..it depends. If you want to just fix the scratch, and it’s not too deep, you can buy a wax filler stick, that matches the finish color. You rub this stick across the scratch, and the wax fills in the “valley.” There are color stain pens that wood working stores sell that will match almost any wood color perfectly. Once waxed and “penned,” a little polish will make most minor scratches disappear. Go to a wood working store for all these supplies. They sell them at Home depot and Lowes, but not the really great quality stuff the pro places have.
If it is a deep gouge that has actually cut into the wood surface, then you would need to remove the finish, and sand / refinish the surface. This would involve first stripping off the old finish with a gel stripper. This is very messy and difficult. Stripper is basically an acid that eats away the old finish. Once that is gone, you would sand it smooth with a palm sander, and progressively finer sand paper. Like go from 100 grit to 320 grit to 500 grit sand paper. Clean all the sanding dust off, with a tack cloth, then apply a stain. Then finally finish the surface with a few layers of polyurethane. This whole process is not easy, and requires special brushes and tools, and practice. If it is a big gouge, I would recommend getting a quote from a pro.
