There is an article I once read on the website of Stars on the meaning behind the names of NHL teams that is what has been said about Tampa Bay Tampa Bay Lightning – While the names of many teams occurred in a variety of strange ways, Tampa Bay can take the cake, as is the less conventional in their decision. Then general Manager Phil Esposito was sitting with friends on a bridge overlooking the bay, when a storm hit the area. After two bolts struck nearby, someone mentioned that lightning would be a good name for a hockey team, particularly that which is in the lightning capital of the world. The rest, as they say, is history.
